The threat of a new war looms in Sudan, even as the country prepares for a January 2010 referendum that could split it in two. It is time for a powerful, proven, and effective policy.

The president faces a critical decision on how to move forward on Sudan–including one that may result in a severe shift in approach in U.S. policy nearly 100 days before the referendum vote that could divide Africa’s largest country.

Urge President Obama to adopt the right plan for Sudan.

Irondequoit High School Bones and Jewelry

We’re so excited to have received 49 bones made at Irondequoit High School’s annual arts festival by its students, faculty, and principal. Extensive study of both the Holocaust and the Rwandan genocide inspired the tenth grade class of the Rochester, NY school to help One Million Bones. Students also made and sold bone jewelry (see instructions and materials for how to make your own below). The sale was a creative way to raise money to sponsor each bone that the students made. MAKE YOUR OWN BONE JEWELRY!

Suggested Materials:

(for earrings)

• “Sculpey” type clay

• two 4-5” pieces of wire

• earring hooks

(for necklaces/bracelets

• “Sculpey” type clay

• twine

• beads

INSTRUCTIONS:

For earrings:

1. Make 2 bones out of clay (Irondequoit’s are about 1.5” long) and fire.

2. Use wire to wrap around the bone, leaving about an inch from the top of the bone.

3. Slide the earring hook onto the extra wire and wrap the remainder back around the bone.

For Necklaces/ Bracelets:

1. Make bone(s) out of clay, making a small hole down the center for the string to go through. Fire.

2. Cut desired length of twine.

3. String bones and beads as you like.

Exciting New Partnership

We at One Million Bones are entirely thrilled to report that we’ve formed a new partnership with The Global Press Institute. The Global Press Institute is a nonprofit organization looking to bring responsible journalism into the world, particularly the areas that regularly wouldn’t have access to any form of newswire. They have over 20 news desks in different countries and work with other nonprofits dedicated to supporting human development and rights. One Million Bones and the Press Institute are co-developing a curriculum on Reporting Genocide in Africa and Asia. This course will be available in the Fall of 2010 as a day-long seminar for Press Institute reporters in Uganda, Sri Lanka and Nepal.
